Society isn’t teaching children about sex at his age, but maybe it should. Aside from that, he deals with the terrible relationship of his parents, his mother’s sexual experimentation (not on him, luckily), and trying to decide who he wants to be– who he is. Augusten has a romantic relationship with a much older man, he has sex before he even reaches adulthood, and he lives in a house where all of this is okay. They especially should not be looking to physically and emotionally research it. In the opinions of many, children of twelve or thirteen shouldn’t even have a sexual orientation. There are not many novels in the world that dictate the struggles of a young child discovering their sexual identity and exploring it. However, they must realize that foremost, this book is a story of self-discovery. The book contains explicit sexual content, as well as drug content, and it is somewhat understandable why adults would not want the book being given to students to read. The memoir shows the places he goes, the people he meets, and the person he becomes. The memoir tells the story of the title character, who gets sent to live with his mother’s psychiatrist after she decides she cannot handle raising him. This month, I’m reading Running with Scissors, by Augusten Burroughs. Running With Scissors by Augusten Burroughs
